Portraits of Hanns Heinen

As master of the house that hosted the “Black House” artists’ colony, Hanns Heinen was the subject of many portraits and sketches by the visitors to the colony.

Countless drawings and portrait studies of him remain, including several paintings. Some of these depict him alongside his wife and sons, while others are individual portraits.

Some of Erwin Bowien’s masterpieces include his monumental painting “Hanns Heinen with Sons” (1932) and “Night Scene” which depicts Hanns Heinen alongside his wife Erna Heinen-Steinhoff. However, the painting has been missing since a break-in in 2006.
